Large Arena Venue Experiences Massive Energy Cost Savings thanks to NPBI
Florida’s Amalie Arena seats more than 20,000 spectators. The home of the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning is a multi-use entertainment hub for sporting events, concerts and shows. During 2015 renovations, an affordable, effective air purification solution for the venue was identified as a top priority.
The original design of Amalie Arena’s HVAC system required approximately 202,000 CFM of outside air, according to the ASHRAE Ventilation Rate Procedure, to dilute the contaminants in the air and produce acceptable indoor air quality. The project team turned to Global Plasma Solutions® (GPS®) to address the challenge.
Using the ASHRAE Indoor Air Quality Procedure, GPS tapped its needlepoint bipolar ionization (NPBI®) technology to control airborne contaminants while reducing the amount of outdoor air needed. NPBI technology safely and effectively tackles airborne viruses and other pathogens while also making dust, pollen and other particles easier to capture in air filtration systems.
THE GPS PRODUCTS PROVIDED EXCELLENT INDOOR AIR QUALITY WHILE REDUCING CAPITAL AND OPERATING COSTS:
Amalie Arena’s outside air intake was reduced to 108,000 CFM for a total savings of 94,000 CFM, or about 700 tons of cooling capacity.
The reduction in cooling capacity resulted in savings of more than $1 million in capital equipment.
The arena is enjoying $115,000 in energy cost savings on an annual basis.
